About Dr. Neelam Mohan


Dr. Neelam Mohan is one of the few doctors who has beautifully balanced the various pillars of medicine as an astute clinician, academician, teacher, publisher, leader/administrator and social worker.

She is a pioneer in the field of pediatric hepatology and liver transplantation and is credited with the evolution and establishment of the busiest Pediatric Liver Transplant Programme in the country. She has been honoured with the prestigious Dr. B.C. National Award by Hon’ble President of India in 2016.

She is pioneer in starting therapeutic endoscopy in India and has an experience of >15000 endoscopic (diagnostic and therapeutic) procedures in children & small babies.

She has a vast experience in managing various liver disease in children such as cholestasis, metabolic liver disease, viral hepatitis , fatty liver disease , liver tumor, acute liver failure etc. In addition over the last two decades of her clinical career she has a vast experience of managing complicated Gastro-intestine (GI) cases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) , pancreatitis, food allergies , constipation , gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), GI bleed, Hirschsprung disease etc. It’s a matter of great pride that she has been involved in management guidelines of most of the pediatric liver and GI diseases at global besides national levels.

Her vision is to establish a state of the art large “Children’s Hospital”/ Women and Child Hospital providing A to Z facilities including secondary tertiary and quaternary care at an affordable prize, in an ethical manner with substantial provision of good health care for economically challenged patients.



Current Designation

Director, Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Liver transplantation, Medanta the Medicity, Gurgaon (July 2010 – till date). She founded the first such department in the country provide comprehensive thoroughgoing facilities for children with gastrointestinal and liver diseases, including liver transplantations.

  • President of Commonwealth Pediatric Gastroenterology & Nutrition society (CAPGAN)
  • President of CHILD (children intestinal and liver disease) society.
  • Advisor to PM-JAY (Pradhan Mantri – Jan Arogya Yojna)
  • Advisor to national board of examinations (NBE) for Pediatrics and accreditation examiner of NBE.
  • Co-chair of Standard Treatment Workflows (STWs) development in Pediatrics, endeavour by Government of India (GOI) with Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
  • Examiner for MRCPCH /DCH conducted by Royal College Physician of Child Health
  • National Scientific convenor and coordinator for Acute Diarrhoea Module in Pediatrics (2019 -2021), by Central IAP.
  • National Coordinator for Nutrition in Children Module by Central IAP (2020 -2021)

  • Hon. Consultant, Paediatric Gastroenterologist, Hepatologist, Therapeutic Endoscopist and Liver Transplant Physician, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, New Delhi (1998 – July 2010) where she set up pediatric gastroenterology and liver transplant services.
  • Executive member of central IAP (Indian Academy of Pediatric) represent State of Haryana a body of >30,000 pediatrics : 2019 -2021
  • IMA National Coordinator of Hepatitis B and C Control Program 2017 – 2019.
  • Associate editor of Journal of Transplantation  (international journal – 1st Indian to be on this editorial board) – 2016 -2018
  • National coordination of IAP diarrhea modules ; 2018 -2019
  • Convenor from India for ‘Aman Ki Asha’ health initiative project between India and Pakistan -2011

Pioneered developments in the field of liver transplant in India and credited with several firsts such as:

World level credits

  • Word’s successful liver transplant in lightest baby of 2kg (2016).
  • World’s first chain of 3 pediatric living related liver transplants with 2 donors (2011)
  • World’s first living related liver transplant that cured a baby with factor VII deficiency (2010)
  • World’s youngest domino liver transplant (2009)

National level credits:

  • India’s first successful pediatric cadaveric reduced liver transplant (2003).
  • India’s first successful survival of liver transplant in a fulminant liver failure (2004).
  • South Asia’s first successful combined liver and kidney transplant from two live donors. (2007).
  • India’s first successful pediatric liver transplantation a child curing liver and lung failure, due to massive pulmonary shunt -2016.
  • India’s first Swap liver transplantation (2009).
  • India’s first ABO-incompatible liver transplant in a child. (2012).
  • India’s first liver transplant that cured a child with Citrullinemia -2013.
  • India’s youngest liver transplantation in a 4 kg baby from Indore 2015.
